Why one contractor

Where the roof meets the walls of an older home

Many Pontiac houses have been re-sided at least once, often right over the original wood. Over time you find the same problems: siding that is cracked, faded or loose, soft sheathing under it, and water stains where a porch roof, a dormer or an addition meets the wall. On older homes with lots of roof-to-wall joints, those intersections are where most siding leaks start.

That is why it helps to have one crew responsible for the roof, the gutters and the siding. Step flashing and kickout flashing go in where the roof meets the wall, so water is turned into the gutter instead of running down behind the siding. Housewrap is lapped the right way, windows and doors are flashed, and the trim and soffits tie into the roof edge.

When we remove old siding, we photograph the sheathing and any rot we find, and you see it before we go further. Then the new siding goes up with the same daily cleanup and briefing as a roofing job. If the roof is also near the end of its life, doing both together lets us tie every joint in properly once.

Choosing the scope

Repair, re-side, or do it with the roof

Not every house needs new siding. If the damage is limited to one wall or a few panels and the rest is sound, a repair is the honest answer. When the siding is cracked, faded or loose all over, or water is getting behind it, a full re-side makes more sense.

If your roof is also getting old, doing roof, gutters and siding together is often the smartest move: the flashing at every roof line is done once and done right, and you can choose shingle and siding colors side by side. We’ll walk you through material and color choices at the estimate, and you can preview Owens Corning shingle colors with the Design EyeQ visualizer.

Either way, the estimate is in writing, with photos of the damage we found, so you can compare it fairly.

“Kincaide did a phenomenal job fixing up my garage roof and siding. They also cleaned up the area after so my dog wouldn’t get hurt. Everytime there was any issue found during installation, they provided picture evidence. They also were the best cost when compared to other companies. Highly recommend.”

Siding around Pontiac

What Pontiac siding goes through

Michigan weather works on siding the same way it works on roofs.

Freeze-thaw cycles crack brittle siding and open gaps at trim and corners. Summer hail and wind dent, crack and loosen panels. On older houses with additions and porches, water that is not directed away by flashing runs down the walls and into the sheathing. We look at all of it during the inspection, from the roof joints down to the foundation line.

Older homes

Siding layered over original wood, with soft sheathing checked and photographed before new siding goes on.

Storm damage

Hail and wind damage to siding documented along with the roof for your adjuster.

Roof-to-wall joints

Kickout and step flashing at porches, dormers and additions where leaks begin.

Roofing questions

Siding questions from Pontiac homeowners

Straight answers about new siding and how it ties into the roof.

Do I need a permit for new siding in Pontiac?
Re-siding a house often requires a permit, and homes in a designated historic district may have exterior review as well. Check with the City of Pontiac building department for your address before work is scheduled.
My Pontiac house has siding over the original wood. Does it all come off?
Usually we remove the newer layer so we can see the sheathing and fix what is soft. Whether the original wood stays depends on its condition, and we show you photos before deciding.
Should I do siding and the roof at the same time?
If both are near the end of their life, it often makes sense. The flashing where the roof meets the walls can be done once, correctly, by one crew.
Can you match my existing siding for a repair?
Sometimes. Older siding fades and profiles change, so a repair may not match exactly. We show you what is available before any work starts.
Is storm damage to siding covered by insurance?
That is up to your insurer. We photograph siding damage along with the roof and include it in the scope you share with your adjuster.
What affects the cost of new siding?
The size and height of the house, how much old siding comes off, sheathing repairs, trim and soffit work, and the product you choose. The inspection and written estimate are free.
